Extreme Marine Habitats

Extreme marine habitats are where I think the most interesting chemistry is hiding. Brine pools, hydrothermal vents, and the deep sea push life to its limits, and the organisms that manage to survive there often do so with unusual metabolisms and defensive chemistry found nowhere else. That is what draws me in: the harder a place is to live, the more likely its inhabitants have evolved something genuinely new and worth discovering.
